The ceremony during this day is composed of prayers, sermons, and hymns. The clergies are the ones who give the sermons. The people also walk around the city. The final site is the place where Jesus ascended into heaven. There are also some recitations that people do. People carry palm, which is the main symbol of the day.
The tradition of celebrating the Palm Sunday then went on to be adapted by Constantinople in Turkey and the Western Churches.
The Palm Sunday is celebrated to commemorate the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. According to the gospels, Jesus entered the city while riding a donkey. Crowds then praise him and spread their cloaks while holding palm branches.
Back in those times, kings and nobles are usually the ones who ride a donkey. Donkeys are also symbols of peace. In addition, the waving of palm branches indicates the triumphant arrival of a king into the area or land.
The palm Sunday celebration usually starts with a procession followed by a mass. There are usually sellers of palms outside or around the churches from which people buy those palms to be brought back at their own homes. Some people believe that putting palm at the door of their houses will repel all evil.
